When your loved one is dealing with Dementia, it can be difficult to communicate and help them succeed in day-to-day activities.
We’ve compiled a list of activities that can help them feel successful every day and reduce or eliminate agitation, depression, anxiety, and even the need for additional medications.
Every individual is different, so it may take some experimentation to find which activities bring them the most joy, but it’s well worth the time spent to see them happy and fulfilled.
Folding Laundry
Asking your loved one to help fold laundry is a great way to help them feel successful and as if they’re contributing to the household… without any added frustration. Depending on the individual, you may choose to only give them towels as they are the least frustrating to fold.
Create a Memory Box
Use keepsakes, photos, and items from their career or daily life to help them feel connected to their past.
For example, if someone worked in an office, paper clips, notepads, calculator, pens, etc. would be good items for the box. If they worked in construction, nuts, bolts, sandpaper, and a small piece of wood might be great items for their box.
Create Sorting Boxes
This could be anything from wooden blocks in different shapes and colors to random cuts of fabric. Fabric may be more enjoyable for someone who used to sew. Your loved one might enjoy sifting through the box, sorting the fabric by color or pattern, folding the pieces, etc.
There are also sorting boards that can be purchased for the same purpose.
This activity is something to keep the mind busy without adding too much challenge that becomes frustrating to many people with dementia.
