As we approach the holidays this November, it’s fitting that it is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and a time to help loved ones with the disease through the holidays.

For you and your loved ones who have Alzheimer’s and related dementia, the holidays can be a struggle and painful reminder of times past when things were “normal” in your lives. But you can also have an enjoyable, memorable holiday season with planning, flexibility, and making new memories.

Here is a helpful guide to navigating the holiday season with loves ones who have Alzheimer’s or related dementia.

Have a Plan

Make sure everyone in your family is on the same page when it comes to holiday planning. This includes planning to spend the holiday in a place or environment that works best for your loved one.

If they’re in an assisted living facility, that may be the best place for them. For the holidays, be sure to put your loved one’s needs ahead of yours or anyone else’s.

You also may need to keep a smaller group and be prepared to take breaks. This can help ease stress and burdens of larger groups or events.

Flexibility is Key

The holiday season is a blessing. Keep in mind that when it comes to spending time with loved ones with Alzheimer’s, “blessed are the flexible.”

Be prepared to change plans or switch things up. This is important because your loved one may get confused, or get agitated, or say things that don’t make sense.

It’s okay. Be prepared to go another direction and know that you’re all still together. Perhaps it may just end up you listen to music together, or watch a movie, or enjoy the decorations.

Make the best of whatever happens and be prepared to go with the flow. Life is full of changes and holidays with loved ones who have Alzheimer’s or other demential is no different. We’re pretty sure you’ll have memorable moments in this new season of life for you and your loved ones.
